Are there false advertisements for antivirus software?

I currently have Norton antivirus which has always done a really good job of protecting my computer. Well just today, about 10 minutes ago, actually, i went on a website and this thing popped up. I'm not sure if it was an actual pop up or if it was legit. It said something like ';warning your comp has been infected with spyware and trojan viruses'; or something like that. so i pressed fix, it went through this whole process of checking my computer for these viruses, and it found like 41 threats. so when i pushed fix it said ';you need to register'; and i found out that it was like 100 bucks. so before deciding to fork over the cash, I scanned my computer with my norton and it found only one risk, which it fixed easily, and i've heard norton is supposed to be really good so i kinda trust that. so..... could this pop up have been a scam? it was for ';anti-virus number-1';Are there false advertisements for antivirus software?
Yes it is a 'scam'. It's rouge anti-virus software and it's findings are false. It is a threat to your computer. Read this:

Follow the instructions included for using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to remove it.Are there false advertisements for antivirus software?
a big yes.that's how the scam works.very wise move on your part not to believe the scam but instead to scan with your legitimate program.anti-virus 1 is a bad rouge program.happened to me before.didn't fall for it.never agree to a scan when you see a pop up like that.they will always tell you your machine is infected when its not.you handled it well.
Yes, there are plenty of these following Conflicker. I suggest stay with Norton, as it is very trusty. There are plenty of these such as Antivirus 2009. Stay away from these, and keep Norton.

Tip: Never install 2 virus scanners as they fight and crash your computer.

Hope this answers
It is a scam. However Norton is doing a sucky job of protecting your computer. You have Spyware and need to scan with Malwarebytes

Your computer may be infected by a trojan/Fake Scan...it happens to alot of people on their pc's and once they hit the install button...its to late..its very hard to get rid of...you will have to go through all your programs and delete whatever security system is on there now besides Norton....your computer is not infected before the scan ...but if you pressed the run or ok button..most likely you have a fake Trojan/scan on your pc...I may be wrong so don't panic...just follow the above unistallation istructions and if it still pop's up...then you are infected.......the whole thing was nothing but smoke and mirrors trying to convince you that your computer is infected.......
